This is the first part of the article. This one is going to be public. This part is about why you can be banned. The second article will be for my subscribers only about how to unban your accounts.

So plan:

  1. Types of ban
  2. Reasons of ban
  3. Steps to not be banned
  4. First actions to take if you receive warnings

Types of ban

There are two usual types of ban on Upwork: temporary hold and permanent ban. The first one is quite easy to resolve. Just follow the instructions. Here is an example:

!The best way to do that is also to answer point by point.

However, you may receive a permanent ban, like:

So what are the possible reasons?

  1. Breaking Rules (providing your contact information or asking clients for contact information are here)
  2. Providing fake information
  3. Bad Behavior
  4. Poor performance
  5. Payment Issues
  6. Multiple Accounts
  7. Scams and fraud
  8. Spamming

Let's talk about a few of them that seem to be a bit not so clear:

Breaking rules. Please, really read this article from Upwork. It shows exactly their most important rules that shouldn't be broken. Remember, that you cannot:

  • share your contact info
  • ask for your client's info
  • ask clients to move outside of Upwork
  • ignore verifications

Poor Performance. This is not about taking a small amount of contracts. NO. It's when you are taking contracts and receiving 1-2 stars only.

Steps to not be banned

  1. Read news, articles, and the forum. They are writing right away when their policy is changed
  2. Read my blog๐Ÿ˜€
  3. Don't try to go out at least before the contract is set.
  4. Use Upwork scheduler.
  5. Use Upwork for calls OR you can use meeting rooms which are not requesting for any contact info. Like tokbox
  6. Be very careful with the documents' verifications. Take it serious
  7. If you are selling development, but you are not, and verification is coming - add the words Manager, PM etc to pass the call.
  8. Be very polite with support.

First actions to take if you receive warnings

Please DO NOT send your first reply in emotions. This first reply is the most important one. Most probably, you just need to answer them step by step with your story that will be a base for all the next steps to unban. I recommend using the words "dear support"and "possibly misunderstanding"

Follow that and your account will be up.

Just today we unbanned the guy:
